Figure 8's may also be used as a belay device when a more appropriate tool is not available. The Rescue 8 has ears for extra friction on heavier loads and is available in both steel and aluminum (the Straight 8 is available in aluminum only).
Use the aluminum 8's for personal descent and the steel 8's in conjunction with a sling for light-duty rigging.
